Becoming

“Becoming” …  becoming is a term we hear often, especially in this day and age. But what does it mean?  In the world I typically heard I’m becoming my “best self”. But what does that mean in God's eyes? We are commissioned to look like and become more like Christ, being your best self and being more like Christ sounds like 2 different things… Oop lemme chill out a bit, I just pushed you into the deep end without you testing the water and I hope you can swim. Seriously though, what does becoming mean to you? What does “to become” even mean?

We are all going through the process of becoming and the goal is to become more like Christ. I’m going to say the word become(ing) so many times- someone do a count lol. When I was given this topic I was a bit hesitant because that meant I had to get vulnerable and do some research. Let's dive into some definitions shall we. To become means to begin to be, becoming is a process of coming to be something or of passing into a state according to Oxford language but I felt like there was more. In the Bible become and becoming also has two different definitions and multiple. To become in the old testament means to arise, appear, to come, to be, to grow, promote, to make powerful, to be brought up, and to do great things. In the new testament to become means receive being, to come to pass, to be made finished ( miracles ). Becoming means to be comely and beautiful.  Now let's sit with these definitions, isn’t that beautiful…

Becoming requires the pruning of your old self and old habits. Why? So that you can arise! God wants you to grow and become the woman He called you to be. Take the Isarealites for example. They cried out to God for a change, to get out of bondage, and God eventually heard them. After many layers of the revealing of God’s glory and sovereignty they were let go. It states in Exodus that there were 2 routes, one path led to conflict (war) and the second path was the desert. They took the desert but while in the desert, they complained and murmured wishing to go back to the bondage. Why was that? They didn't want the discomfort of going through something they had never been through before. They lost faith, they missed the comfort of what was familiar, they lacked trust that God would see them through,. God delivered the Israelites in a day but it took 40 years for the Israelites to be delivered from Egypt. This tells us that we must continue to renew our minds. That we must evolve despite how uncomfortable it is in the moment, we have to remember that God is the God of all comfort, and that He will see us through. You always hear it’s not about the destination but the journey. The journey of becoming is tough at times but is the best time.

Becoming is a process meant to be taken day by day and step by step. Who are you in the process of becoming? For me, I’m in the process of becoming a wife and much more. So that means I’m learning a lot about cooking different meals, deep cleanings, prayer, and covering. So that means I also make a ton of mistakes and that’s normal. We have to learn from our mistakes and grow from them. There’s a difference between perfection and excellence. The only thing that was perfect was the life of Jesus other than that strive to be excellent which is simply doing your best. Success doesn’t happen overnight, it's something you must walk out day by day. We wish it could happen in a snap of a finger but that’s like putting something in the microwave vs slow cooking in a crock pot… There’s a big difference and you’ll definitely get different results. God wants to give us the desires of our hearts but would we be able to sustain it and if so .. for how long? God wants to give you a gift He knows you can keep and won’t destroy you.

The Lord wants you to receive the identity He gave you and not the one you picked up from the trauma you endured. Becoming means to take off the layers back to who He called you to be. He wants to promote you to your next level but sometimes there’s a work He wants to do in your heart. He does this so nothing goes before your first love ( HIM ) and becomes an idol. He knows your heart and wants what’s best for you.

When things don’t seem ideal, know it's going exactly according to plan. Lean on some scriptures that will help you tackle the areas that you’re overcoming, have some worship songs that you back out when you need to shift the atmosphere, intentionally pray on the areas keeping you down, and cast it all at His feet. Becoming is a process that when you overcome and look back you’ll be so glad that you persevered. I’ll leave you with 3 scriptures to equip you on your journey.

“Consider it pure joy, my brothers and sisters, whenever you face trials of many kinds, because you know that the testing of your faith produces perseverance. Let perseverance finish its work so that you may be mature and complete, not lacking anything.” James 1:2-4

“For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.” Jeremiah 29:11

“But seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you.” Matthew 6:33

Girl He got you! And you got this! You don't know the impact that you’ll make once you give God your yes. There are people on the other side of your yes waiting for you to become the woman God called you to be. Becoming isn't for the faint of heart. If it was easy everyone would do it but you're special and have been set apart. Don’t settle for temporary comfort for long term suffering. Become resilient in the face of trials you’ll thank yourself later. Alright ladies I pray this empowered you and encouraged you.
